A Paris Education

A Paris Education (Mes Provinciales), dir. Jean-Paul Civeyrac, France 2018, 136 min., French with English subtitles, 12A

Jean-Paul Civeyrac (My Friend Victoria, All the Fine Promises) directs this intimate cinematic love letter to the movies – and to the possibilities and complexities of youth and young love.

After Étienne (Andranic Manet) leaves Lyon and his girlfriend (Diane Rouxel) to study at film school in Paris, he quickly falls into student bohemia. Étienne is both challenged and enthused by his new social circle, sharing ideas and discussing Bach, Baudelaire and – above all – cinema. But the fractious relationship between Étienne and his fellow film student Mathias (Corentin Fila) becomes even more emotionally complicated when Annabelle (Sophie Verbeeck), a political activist, steps into his life.
