A is for Artist + Aphra and Aradia
Institute of Contemporary Arts

This screening comprises recent works commissioned by the ICA by artists who participated in the STOP PLAY RECORD (2015 – 18).

Ayo Akingbade's black and white 16mm short is a contemplative meditation on what it means to sustain oneself and grow as an artist. Her subtle narrative interweaves memory and place, linking the past to her motivations to make art and her optimism for what is to come next.

Célia Hay’s longform film follows Aphra, a young woman who travels to a desolate island to meet Aradia, a local witch. Aphra endeavours to convince her to perform a series of rituals to call for her sister, and the two women form an unconventional bond.
Ayo Akingbade lives and works in London. Her short film Tower XYZ was produced as part of STOP PLAY RECORD and has been shown at multiple festivals and screenings throughout 2017. Tower XYZ received a Special Mention Award at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen and won the inaugural Sonja Savić Award. She is a recipient of the 2018 Sundance Institute Ignite Fellowship for emerging filmmakers and currently exhibiting in Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2018.

Célia Hay lives and works in London. Hay and Annie Vimeux’s collaboration, And the River walked with us, was produced as part of part of STOP PLAY RECORD. It was included in the London Short Film Festival along with numerous other screenings in 2017 and 2018.
