Freedom Fields, dir. Naziha Arebi, Lybia / United Kingdom 2018, 96 min., Arabic with English subtitle

An intimate look at post-revolution Libya through the eyes of an aspiring all-female soccer team, whose struggle to gain mainstream acceptance mirrors the broader challenges facing women in contemporary Libyan society.

Spanning several years, Freedom Fields follows three women and their football team as they prepare for Libya’s first ever women’s international match while the country descends into civil war and the utopian hopes of the Arab Spring begin to fade. Against the backdrop of a conservative society, the team find themselves the focus of media attention and public outcry which do little to distract from their profound commitment to their sport and one another.
