Harlem – 125th Street/Lexington Avenue Artist’s Talk: Khalik Allah
Institute of Contemporary Arts
IWOW: I Walk on Water, dir. Khalik Allah, USA 2020, 198 min., English

Returning to FRAMES of REPRESENTATION after premiering Black Mother in 2018, New York-based director and photographer Khalik Allah is back this year with IWOW: I Walk on Water. Hosted by Shanida Scotland, Head of Film at Doc Society, this conversation focuses on Allah’s photography practice to discuss his body of work, which is centred on black communities in Harlem and particularly those living at the intersection of 125th Street and Lexington Avenue. Destabilising common narratives of race and marginalisation, Allah’s cross-disciplinary work includes his ongoing photography series intertwined with his filmmaking practice, ranging from the raw, visionary Field Niggas (2015) to his most recent powerful diary film IWOW: I Walk on Water (2020), all of which will be addressed alongside projections of many of his most iconic photographs.
