Her Sketchbook + Q&A
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Her Sketchbook (Sekai wa kyo kara kimi no mono), dir. Masaya Ozaki, Japan 2017, 106 min., Japanese with English subtitles, 12A

A Q&A follows the screening of this coming of age film about a young woman who escapes reality through immersing herself in manga.

Mami has rarely left home since she dropped out of middle school. She spends her days drawing, copying the illustrations in her favourite comics. After landing a job as a video game tester, Mami finds herself stepping out of her comfort zone and easing herself back into life outside the confines of her apartment.

Starring Mugi Kadowaki (A Double Life, Close-Knit), Her Sketchbook shines a light on hikikomori, a condition which leads to extreme withdrawal from society.
