A tale of love and loss, this animated fantasy film and directorial debut from Mari Okada tells the story of Maquia, an orphan and lonely teenage girl from the Iolf clan. Her people live peacefully for centuries in their adolescent bodies, weaving their stories into fabrics. When a violent mortal tribe invades seeking their secrets, Maquia escapes into the woods, where she finds an orphan baby and chooses to show him love him and raise him into adulthood. Inevitably, Maquia suffers heartbreak and the loneliness returns, as her adopted child continues to age and she remains trapped in her immortal body.
