Mary and The Witch's Flower, Dir. Hiromasa Yonebayashi, Japan, 2017, 103 mins, Japanese and English

Anime adventure film Mary and The Witch's Flower tells the tale of Mary, a curious young girl who wanders into the woods and happens upon a rare Fly-by-Night flower that grants magical powers for one night only. An old broomstick, mysteriously resting nearby, whisks Mary up into the moonlight and away to Endor College school of magic, where she encounters a fantastical world of characters and creatures that is also inhabited by demons and evil. Terrible things begin to happen, confronting Mary with moral lessons and challenges of triumphs and failures that must be resolved before the night ends.

This film, based on Mary Stewart’s 1971 classic children’s book The Little Broomstick, is the directorial debut of former Studio Ghibli animator Hiromasa Yonebayashi and features the voices of Ruby Barnhill, Kate Winslet and Jim Broadbent.

Mary and The Witch's Flower will be screened in Japanese with English subtitles, however, weekend screenings before 6pm are dubbed into English.
