McCabe and Mrs. Miller, dir. Robert Altman, USA 1971, 121 min., English
In Robert Altman’s atmospheric 1971 western, charismatic gambler John McCabe arrives in a ramshackle Pacific Northwest mining town and strikes up a professional partnership with shrewd madam, Mrs. Miller.
As their joint venture thrives, encroaching corporate interests threaten the town and McCabe and Mrs. Miller’s fraught relationship.
With renowned performances from Warren Beatty and Julie Christie, distinctive photography by Vilmos Zsigmond and a layered soundtrack by Leonard Cohen, McCabe and Mrs. Miller is recognised as one of Altman’s true masterpieces.
The ICA screens Marianne and Leonard, Nick Broomfield’s documentary about Leonard Cohen and his longtime friend, Marianne Ihlen, from 26 July.
