One Sings, the Other Doesn’t + intro
Institute of Contemporary Arts
One Sings, the Other Doesn’t (L’une chante, l’autre pas), dir. Agnès Varda, France, 1977, 116 mins, French with English subtitles

A radical blend of genres, Agnès Varda’s ‘feminist musical’ centres on the lives of two women involved with the women’s movement. Suzanne is a 22-year-old mother of two young children who becomes friends with Pauline, a rebellious 17-year-old student. Suzanne is pregnant and wants an abortion, which is illegal in France of 1962. When Pauline provides money and advice, the two women kindle a friendship that spans more than a decade of changes surrounding gender and women’s rights. This is a personal film for Varda, who was involved in the women’s movement, and her own two children form part of the large cast.
