Permission, dir. Soheil Beiraghi, Iran 2018, 88 min., Farsi with English subtitles

Based on real events, Iranian writer-director Soheil Beiraghi’s second feature is the story of one woman’s fight for gender equality.

Afrooz is the devoted captain of Iran’s national futsal squad, who have been selected to compete in the Women’s Asia Cup final. However, as she attempts to travel to Malaysia with her team, she learns that her estranged husband has disallowed her from exiting the country.

Determined to make it to the tournament, Afrooz is forced to reckon with the Iranian legal system, the conservative futsal federation, and her punitive husband.
