PREVIEW Diamantino + Q&A
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Diamantino, dirs. Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt, Portugal 2018, 92 min., Portuguese with English subtitles

Grand Prix winner of Critics’ Week at Cannes, Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt’s singular Diamantino is at once a queer fairy tale, a sci-fi thriller, and an outrageous political satire of modern Europe.

Portuguese soccer star Diamantino ends his career in disgrace after being surreally manipulated for nefarious political gain. Searching for a new purpose, the international icon sets out on a delirious odyssey in which he navigates neo-fascism, the refugee crisis, and genetic modification. A genre-melding debut, Diamantino is a deeply bizarre and transgressive cinematic experience.
