PREVIEW The Amazing Johnathan Documentary
Institute of Contemporary Arts
The Amazing Johnathan Documentary, dir. Ben Berman, USA 2019, 91 min., English

What begins as a portrait of magician, comedian and performance artist John Edward Szeles (aka the Amazing Johnathan) unravels into a meta-narrative about the process and ethics of documentary making.

After building a career out of shock and deception during the 1980s, Johnathan is diagnosed with a terminal heart condition, given one year to live, and forced to retire his act. Three years later, Johnathan is still alive – much to everyone’s amazement – and commencing an epic comeback tour, accompanied by documentarian Ben Berman. However, as their mutual journey kicks off, Johnathan drops a bombshell that sends the film spiralling into uncertainty.
