The Disappearance of My Mother
Institute of Contemporary Arts
The Disappearance of My Mother, dir. Beniamino Barrese, Italy 2019, 94 min., English and Italian with English subtitles

As an iconic fashion model during the 1960s, Benedetta Barzini was a muse to Warhol, Dali, Penn and Avedon. As a radical feminist in the 1970s, she fought for the rights and emancipation of women. But at the age of 75, Benedetta has become exhausted with the various roles that life has imposed upon her and decides escape the world of images and disappear for good.

Beniamino Barrese has filmed his mother since he was a child – despite her protestations. Determined to capture this crucial phase of her life, Barrese quietly observes his mother in an effort to keep her close for as long as possible. The making of the film turns into a battle between mother and son, a stubborn fight to capture the ultimate image of Benedetta – the image of her liberation.
