The House Where the Mermaid Sleeps (Ningyo no nemuru ie), dir. Yukihiko Tsutsumi, Japan 2018, 120 min., Japanese with English subtitles, 12A

An estranged couple face an agonising decision in this thought-provoking drama based on Shingo Higashino’s best-selling novel.

Kaoruko (Ryoko Shinohara) and Kazuaki (Hidetoshi Nishijima) are wrecked with grief after their daughter is left brain dead following a catastrophic accident at a local swimming pool. The family’s doctor presents the couple with an impossible choice: to donate their daughter’s organs to others in need, or to wait until her heart stops beating.

Shinohara was nominated for the Japanese Academy Award for her searing performance in this tragic drama.
