Alva, dir. Ico Costa, Portugal 2019, 98 min., Portuguese with English subtitles
After committing a heinous crime, a man escapes to the forest to avoid capture in Portuguese filmmaker Ico Costa’s debut feature.
Shot in 16mm, Alva follows Henrique, a terse Portuguese smallholder who lives in the Portuguese highlands, far from civilisation. Largely dialogue-free and elliptical in structure, the film allows the viewer to draw their own conclusions about Henrique's motives.
This screening is followed by a Q&A with director Ico Costa.
