Vitalina Varela, dir. Pedro Costa, Portugal 2019, 125 min., Portuguese with English subtitles, 12A

When her husband leaves home to find work in Portugal, Vitalina Varela remains at home in Cape Verde. Years later, she finally makes the journey to Lisbon, but arrives three days after his funeral. Alone and isolated in her late husband's home, she’s forced to face the ghosts of his past – and to find her future.

Winner of the Best Film and Best Actress Awards at the 2019 Locarno Film Festival, Pedro Costa’s latest film joins the likes of Horse Money, Colossal Youth, Casa de Lava and Blood in the catalogue of one of the most distinctive voices in international cinema.

The screening on Tuesday 3 March is followed by a Q&A with film director Pedro Costa, who will also be introducing the screening on Friday 6 March.
