El Mar La Mar Installation
Institute of Contemporary Arts
El Mar La Mar, 2018, Dir. Joshua Bonnetta and J.P. Sniadecki, USA, 16mm transferred to DCP, colour, sound, 66 mins

El Mar La Mar is a journey leading us through the Sonoran desert, where we view and listen to the lives of undocumented immigrants that embrace perilous crossings between the United States and Mexico every day.

Through a polyphonic soundtrack and a cinematic exploration of the desert as an equal place for life and displacement, El Mar La Mar addresses the current global debate on borders and immigration through the multi-faceted panorama of this highly politicised section of land, looking at those human beings who are left with little or no choice but to take this extreme dangerous crossing.

Joshua Bonnetta and J.P. Sniadecki are as concerned with the possibilities of the filmic medium as they are with the communities they engage with. El Mar La Mar is an audio-visual experiment that never stops evolving. Alongside the theatrical cut currently screening in the ICA Cinema, these two newly edited versions of the 16-mm footage film are juxtaposing the beauty of the natural landscape with the tales of death, hardship and the frantic survival of solitary human journeys.

The two installation versions of El Mar La Mar run for 66 minutes on a loop.
