The Heiresses + Q&A
Institute of Contemporary Arts
The Heiresses (Las herederas), Dir. Marcelo Martinessi, Paraguay / Germany / Uruguay / Brazil / Norway / France, 2018, 98 min., Spanish with English subtitles

Once proud members of Paraguay's elite, Chela and Chiquita now live a cloistered life in a grand house falling into disrepair. Together for over thirty years, their debts lead to Chiquita’s imprisonment on fraud charges and Chela, the more reclusive of the couple, is forced to face a new reality. Driving for the first time in years, she begins to provide a local taxi service to a group of wealthy elderly ladies. As Chela settles into her new life, she meets Angy, a sensual young woman with whom she forges a fresh and invigorating new connection. With Angy drawing her out of her shell, Chela begins to rediscover her body and sexuality, embarking on her own personal, intimate revolution.

Written and directed by Paraguayan filmmaker Marcelo Martinessi, The Heiresses premiered in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival, winning Silver Bear for Best Actress and the Alfred Bauer Silver Bear and FIPRESCI prizes for Best Film.
