Sketched in swathes of black and grey and enshrouded in perpetual downpours and drifting mists, Theo Angelopoulos' debut feature centres upon the reconstruction of a crime and in the process explores the larger death of Greek villages in the first half of the twentieth century. 

While the formal tendencies for which Angelopoulos is acclaimed remain largely nascent, his ability to combine myth, history and contemporary life is already strikingly present as he crafts a wholly original debut where past and present, reality and reconstruction endlessly entwine.
