The Dust of Time (Η Σκόνη του Χρόνου), dir. Theo Angelopoulos, Greece / Italy / Germany/ Russia 2008, 125 min.
Book tickets
The past and present finally meet in what would prove to be Theo Angelopoulos's final film. Intended as the middle section of a trilogy bridging Greece's history from post-WW1 to the present day, The Dust of Time centres upon an American filmmaker attempting to reconcile past and present while making a film about the journey of his mother.
In some sense a continuation of the events of The Weeping Meadow albeit muddied by the dust of time, here timelines no longer match and names have changed, and yet the figure of Eleni remains. As both mother and daughter to A, the filmmaker at the films contemporary centre, Eleni's journey from post-Stalin Russia to contemporary Berlin, unfolds as both personal remembrance and imagined fiction.
