Celluloid Sunday: Calendar on 16mm
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Calendar, dir. Atom Egoyan, Canada / Armenia 1993, 73 min., Armenian with English subtitles, PG

Atom Egoyan writes, directs and stars in this witty and devastating investigation of identity, memory and displacement – which here receives a rare 16mm screening.

A Canadian photographer (Egoyan) takes an assignment shooting churches in Armenia for a calendar, with his wife (Arsinée Khanjian, Egoyan’s real-life wife and longtime collaborator) serving as his translator. But as the pair travel the country, the translator is drawn to their driver (Ashot Adamian), the start of a rift that will haunt the photographer long into the future. Unfolding in fragmented fashion and told in part through messages left on a telephone answering machine, Calendar is a rich and profound reflection on emotional and cultural alienation – a typically incisive yet elusive entry in Egoyan’s singular 40-year catalogue.

Celluloid Sunday is a series of screenings showing on original format from the ICA Archive.
