Celluloid Sunday: Madagascar Skin on 35mm
Institute of Contemporary Arts
A white man with a landmass-shaped birthmark on his face stares out into the sky
Madagascar Skin, dir. Chris Newby, UK 1995, 91 min., English, 15

A unique and affecting tale of a disillusioned gay man who flees the city’s shallow scene, convinced that the facial birthmark in the shape of the eponymous island makes him terminally unattractive. Winding up on a rugged stretch of coast he forms a hesitant relationship with an eccentric, sexually ambiguous drifter.

The film is screening on a 35mm print from the ICA Archive.
