Bob Spit: We Do Not Like People, dir. Cesar Cabral, Brazil 2019, 90 min., Portuguese with English subtitles

Currently not available

Cesar Cabral’s joyously uncategorisable debut feature blends documentary, comedy, road movie and stop-motion animation as it tells the story of underground cartoonist Angeli as he fights to free himself from his creator’s clutches. It’s the latest in our season-long Summer Exclusives series spotlighting some of the best new features from around the world – and in the UK, you can only see it at the ICA Cinema.

Bob Spit is an old punk – an old imaginary punk, that is, dreamt up by Brazilian cartoonist Angeli. Spit lives in a post-apocalyptic desert that turns out to be inside his creator’s mind. And when Angeli undergoes a creative crisis, Spit tries to make a break for freedom – trailed by an army of tiny, bloodthirsty clones of Elton John. Anarchic to the point of absurdity, Cabral’s debut is a portrait of the artist like no other in film history.
