Programmed by Autumn Knight to accompany her exhibition I Can’t Complain, Raoul Peck's I Am Not Your Negro (2016) is one of three films in Knight's selection. Knight describes,
‘The chosen films attempt to enter a conversation about complaint. Complaint that is infused with or masked by humour. The figures in the films find creative ways to address the source of their complaint. And by default attempt to address their frustration and disappointment. The prospect of labour and/or craft and seeking the dignity of these efforts circulates as a theme throughout these works.’
I Am Not Your Negro explores the history of racism in the United States through James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript Remember this House. Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, the film reflects on the lives and assassinations of Baldwin’s three friends and civil rights leaders, Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, through Baldwin’s words and rich archival footage.
