Programmed by Autumn Knight to accompany her exhibition I Can’t Complain, Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice (2025) is one of three films in Knight’s selection. As Knight describes:
‘The chosen films attempt to enter a conversation about complaint. Complaint that is infused with or masked by humour. The figures in the films find creative ways to address the source of their complaint. And by default attempt to address their frustration and disappointment. The prospect of labour and/or craft and seeking the dignity of these efforts circulates as a theme throughout these works.’
When a happy family man is dismissed after twenty-five years of loyal service at a paper company, he finds the perfect solution to land his next role: truly eliminate the competition.
One of contemporary cinema’s most audacious stylists, director Park Chan-wook’s latest film, which premiered in the Official Competition at the Venice Film Festival, delivers a deft, jet-black satire with humour and a strange charm.
