Programmed by Autumn Knight to accompany her exhibition I Can’t Complain, Marjane Satrapi 's Persepolis (2007) is one of three films in Knight's selection. Knight describes,
‘The chosen films attempt to enter a conversation about complaint. Complaint that is infused with or masked by humour. The figures in the films find creative ways to address the source of their complaint. And by default attempt to address their frustration and disappointment. The prospect of labour and/or craft and seeking the dignity of these efforts circulates as a theme throughout these works.’
Based on her autobiographical graphic novel of the same name, Persepolis takes us through Satrapi’s childhood transformed by the Iranian Revolution, her teenage exile in Europe and her return to Iran.
