Autumn Knight, video still from Complain/Disappoint, 2023.
Book tickets
In conjunction with Autumn Knight's solo exhibition I Can't Complain, London-based artist Samra Mayanja performs party done: a solo performance that stages the aftermath of a party that may have just ended or may never have begun.
Mayanja conceived the event in direct response to the setting and themes of the gallery installations, the elements of which feature in various ways: the cargo net full off balloons is lowered; some balloons have escaped and lie strewn about the floor. Moving along the lightbox, Mayanja may pop some of them using an assortment of sharp implements.
Mayanja, who also contributed to the exhibition’s audio installation, brings her own stories of complaint into the gallery, rehearsing and reworking them in response to the space and its contents.
About the artist
Samra Mayanja is an artist-writer working across performance and installation. Her practice considers the illegibility of the body and the absurdist impulse to seek what is irretrievably lost. A continuously hopeful but seemingly futile act of searching runs through her work.
