In dialogue with Elisa Giardina Papa's exhibition She Flickered In and Out of History, artist and researcher Onyeka Igwe presents Monisme (2023) directed by Riar Rizaldi, a film situated around Mount Merapi, an active volcano in Indonesia.

Onyeka Igwe writes:

"Contemporary Southeast Asian cinema is where I go when I am looking for films that deftly blur the boundaries of genre, time, and reality. Monisme is an exemplar in the field, a hybrid work which is at times a disturbing watch. Its looming central character is Mount Merapi, an active volcano in Indonesia that potentially threatens human life in the region. But how we encounter Merapi, and how we as humans are to relate to a foreboding natural phenomenon, is considered multiply: through scientific curiosity, spirituality, resource extraction, and myth. For the many is one."
Onyeka Igwe is a London born & based moving image artist and researcher. Her work is aimed at the question: how do we live together? She has exhibited in museums and galleries across the world, and her video works are screened at film festivals internationally.
This event is part of the public programme of Elisa Giardina Papa: She Flickered In and Out of History.
