A dwindling band of cinema diehards in Bradford battle to save their filmmaking club from closure in Kim Hopkins’ delightful documentary feature – the winner of the Audience Award at this year’s Sheffield Doc/Fest.
Bradford Movie Makers was established in 1932, making it one of the oldest amateur filmmaking societies in the world. But with its membership shrinking and money too tight to mention, the future of this cosy community club appears bleak. Will the group’s typically eccentric choice to undertake a shot-by-shot remake of Oklahoma prove their salvation or their undoing? Filmed over three years, Hopkins’ moving feature pays beautiful homage to the power of both cinema and community – and has warmth enough to heat any picture palace through the coldest winter.
