Set during Christmas 1944, A Midnight Clear is an eerie psychological World War II drama about a depleted American army intelligence unit sent to occupy a deserted chateau near enemy lines to gather information. They soon discover a group of Germans who seem willing to surrender but insist on their capture being staged as a military skirmish to protect their families from retribution. Focusing on the psychological and mental health issues of the beleaguered Americans the film has a rare perspective on the US army during World War II and grapples with themes of youth, futility, and the loss of innocence. The young ensemble cast of then-unknowns includes Ethan Hawke, Gary Sinise, Kevin Dillon, Peter Berg, and Frank Whaley. Almost universally praised by critics, London’s Time Out wrote: “Gordon’s absorbing, stylised adaptation of William Wharton’s novel explores issues of faith and morality. The performances are uniformly excellent as the film moves inexorably towards bloody confrontation and spiritual reckoning.”
