A Pleasure, Comrades!
Institute of Contemporary Arts
A Pleasure, Comrades! (Prazer, Camaradas!), dir. José Filipe Costa, Portugal 2019, 105 min., Portuguese with English subtitles

José Filipe Costa follows Red Line with a very different take on the Portuguese Carnation Revolution of 1974 – a charming comic tale of society and morality as told by those who lived through history.

1975, rural Portugal. The country and its people are reorganising themselves in a collective effort that sparks the interest of foreigners who share the revolution’s ideals: volunteering at co-ops, offering literacy, health and sex education – and coming into conflict with the locals’ buttoned-down morals. Drawing from real-life testimonies, A Pleasure, Comrades! gives centre stage to an older generation, who bravely and joyfully re-enact these social and sexual interactions at a time when women were still embarrassed to be naked in front of their husbands. Long live the proletariat – and long live the sexual revolution!

A Pleasure, Comrades! is screening as part of Collective Mobilisation, a survey of work from contemporary Portuguese cinema co-presented by the ICA, TERRATREME and Uma Pedra no Sapato.
