A Summer at Grandpa’s (冬冬的假期) on 35mm
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Two young Taiwanese children stand at a train station, staring at one another
A Summer at Grandpa’s (冬冬的假期), dir. Hou Hsiao-hsien, Taiwan 1984, 93 min., Mandarin with English subtitles

A young boy and his sister spend a summer at their grandparents’ house in the country while their mother recovers from an illness. The children spend most of their time climbing trees and swimming, but as the summer progresses they slowly begin to come to terms with the enigmatic and occasionally threatening realities of adult life. A Summer at Grandpa’s is a contemplative and profoundly moving coming-of-age tale that is entrancingly attuned to the minutiae of daily life and the clash of innocence and experience.
