Act II: Symposium & Roundtable – Activated, Evicted, Expanded: Film Exhibition as Collective Action
Institute of Contemporary Arts

Members of La Clef Revival join us to discuss their extraordinary occupation of the fated La Clef cinema in Paris, the legacy of their occupation – and their ongoing attempts to buy the shuttered venue. It’s part of (G)Round Up! La Clef Revival in Four Acts, a weekend of events dedicated to and co-curated by the collective.

The symposium and roundtable has been designed to encourage exchange and reflection on the importance of collective action in establishing, preserving and maintaining shared spaces and participatory practices in film exhibition. The recent collapse of the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) and its affiliated Filmhouse Cinema and Belmont Filmhouse, and their parent organisation’s lack of consultation with both employees and industry peers, suggests this is an increasingly timely, important and necessary conversation.

La Clef Revival will be joined today by members of several UK-based community-led cinema initiatives, including the volunteer-run Star and Shadow in Newcastle, Deptford Cinema as well as Manish Agarwal, programmer at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. The roundtable will address recent events and how we might collectively reimagine the future of film exhibition.
