ICA is closed from the 30 May – 3 June inclusive.
Winner of a wealth of awards on this year’s festival circuit, including the first ever French Touch Jury Prize for new filmmakers at Cannes, the debut feature from Scottish writer-director Charlotte Wells explores a father–daughter relationship through the sepia-tinted prism of a single family holiday.
Back in the 1990s, 11-year-old Sophie (Frankie Corio) travels to a nondescript Turkish resort with her dad, Calum (Paul Mescal). Some 20-odd years on, the now thirtysomething Sophie (Celia Rowlson-Hall) finds herself looking back to this unremarkable yet treasured holiday, using her fading memories of it to piece together a picture of a father she only ever partly knew. Outstanding performances from the two leads – especially newcomer Corio, a remarkable discovery – highlight this rich, tender and beautiful first feature from a talent to both watch and cherish.
