Anonymous Club is a deeply intimate portrait of singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett – filmed across three years on tour in Europe, the US and Asia, and at home in Melbourne, by director Danny Cohen.
‘I just turned 30 and I feel like I stepped over some sort of line, but I’m still lost.’ So says Barnett in one of the unguarded voice notes that serve as the film’s narration. Recorded at high and low moments on an analogue Dictaphone, these unmediated reflections capture Barnett’s internal struggles – from her internal self-confidence to the more visible pressures of fame and the music industry. Cohen’s status as both filmmaker and friend gives him extraordinary access into the inner life of this exceptional musician – and the result is the very antithesis of a typical rock biography.
