ICA is closed from the 30 May – 3 June inclusive.
This special screening, in collaboration with the Warburg Institute, is a rare opportunity to see Joan Jonas’s acclaimed performance, The Shape, the Scent, the Feel of Things produced at Dia Beacon (New York) in 2005. The event will not only celebrate a landmark work by the great American artist but mark the centenary of the German art historian Aby Warburg’s famous Lecture on the Serpent Ritual, the primary source for Jonas’s piece.
The Shape, the Scent, the Feel of Things is a multimedia journey through memory, myth and cultural history, influenced by both Warburg’s and Jonas’s experiences of Native American rituals. It combines spoken word, choreography, video projections and the musical compositions of Jason Moran to create a layered and immersive narrative.
The screening will be introduced by Bill Sherman, Director of the Warburg Institute, and followed by an informal salon.
