Belle (Ryū to sobakasu no hime), dir. Mamoru Hosoda, Japan 2021, 121 min., Japanese with English subtitles, 12A

Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu (Wolf Children, Mirai) take the story of Beauty and the Beast from 18th century France to the half-virtual 21st century world in this dazzling feature, greeted with huge acclaim at its Cannes premiere last summer – and at its best on the big screen.

Suzu lives in the shadow of grief. At once devastated and resentful, the 17-year-old high school student still mourns the death of her mother many years after the tragedy that killed her. But when Suzu logs on to U, the so-called ‘ultimate virtual community’, she becomes someone else: Belle, a gifted and confident singer. And together with a mysterious Dragon, a fellow resident of the U, she sets out on a journey to discover, and become, who she truly is.
