Juliette Binoche goes undercover in search of an exposé – but the journalist becomes a story of her own in Emmanuel Carrère’s involving adaptation of French journalist Florence Aubenas’s bestselling memoir The Night Cleaner.
Marianne Winckler (Binoche) uproots her life from Paris to Caen in order to research her new book on the insecurities of work in the 21st century. Without revealing her identity, she takes a gruelling job – low pay, long hours, unsympathetic management – as a cleaner on a cross-channel ferry. Marianne grows close to Chrystèle (Hélène Lambert, one of several non-professional actors in the cast), a fellow cleaner and single mother. But as Chrystèle grows suspicious, Marianne fears losing both her friendship and her story. Winning performances bring out the best of Aubenas’s story, a kind of Gallic take on Ken Loach.
