Nabil Ayouch (Horses of God, Razzia) paints an exhilarating portrait of Moroccan youth in thrall to hip hop culture in this appealingly direct drama.
Anas (Anas Basbousi), a teacher, has recently arrived at an arts centre in Sidi Moumen, a troubled neighbourhood in north-east Casablanca. His rebellious streak alienates him from his fellow faculty members. But at the same time, it endears him to a close-knit group of students, whom he gives free rein to discuss such taboo topics as religion, politics and sexuality – and who, energised and inspired by the sound and style of hip hop culture, ultimately plan to put on a concert. Ayouch draws vivid performances from his non-professional cast in this 21st-century reinvention of the classic let’s-do-the-show-right-here story.
