The miserly proprietor of a cloth dyeing factory buys his third wife. Ju Dou (Gong Li), to bear him the heir he craves. Cruelly beaten as penance for the old man's impotence the young woman turns to his nephew, Tian-Qing, for protection.

The second part of Zhang Yimou's loose 'Red Trilogy' is a visually arresting drama of secret love starring Gong Li.
