Celluloid Sunday
Max Renn (James Woods) – sleazy, cynical, quietly ruthless – runs a low-rent, downmarket cable TV channel in Toronto. Searching for content to broadcast, he stumbles on a Malaysian satellite signal that shows uncut footage of unnamed victims apparently being tortured to death. At first appalled and then addicted, he soon embarks on a hallucinatory journey into a shadowy world of right-wing conspiracies, sadomasochistic sex games and bodily transformation. Featuring an eye-catching turn from Debbie Harry in one of her first film roles, this landmark 1983 release retains much of its relevance – and all of its power to shock.
The film is presented on a 35mm print from the ICA Archives.
