Charcoal, dir. Carolina Markowicz, Brazil / Argentina 2022, 104 min., Portuguese with English subtitles, 15

A family in São Paulo’s countryside accepts a mysterious guest into their home, only to discover he’s a wanted Argentine drug lord. With their house his new-found hideout, the family must learn how to live with a dangerous criminal while keeping up the illusion of an unchanged routine to their neighbours.

In her long-awaited debut feature, Carolina Markowicz takes a darkly satirical look at family values, poverty and religion while the different family members get acquainted with the new house guest.
