ICA is closed from the 30 May – 3 June inclusive.
Writer-director Nathalie Álvarez Mesén joins us for a Q&A following this screening of her hugely acclaimed debut feature – a haunting, deeply sensual tale of a woman’s awakening after a lifetime of repression.
Clara (Wendy Chinchilla Araya) lives in the place where she was born and raised 40 years ago: an isolated village in the hills of Costa Rica. Clara is the local healer – believed to have a special connection to God, and charged with sustaining both a family and a village in desperate need of hope. She’s also spent years under the loving but controlling thumb of her mother Fresia (Flor María Vargas Chavez) – but when she finds herself attracted to her niece’s new boyfriend (Daniel Castañeda Rincón), she finds herself physically, sexually and spiritually transformed.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Nathalie Álvarez Mesén, hosted by Anton Bitel.
