ICA is closed from the 30 May – 3 June inclusive.
The latest feature from Susana Nobre (Ordinary Time), Jack’s Ride is an engaging and empathetic portrait of a man navigating the end of his working life – and looking back on the events that shaped who he is today.
Joaquim (Joaquim Veríssimo Calçada, seemingly playing a version of himself) is 63 years old and just about ready to stop working for good. For arcane bureaucratic reasons, his retirement benefits depend on him enduring a brief period of unemployment during which he’s obliged to look for work. But there’s not much work around in this moribund economy, so Joaquim looks back to his time as a New York cabbie – many miles from the Portugal he once more calls home.
The screening will be followed by a conversation with director Susana Nobre.
Jack’s Ride is screening as part of Collective Mobilisation, a survey of work from contemporary Portuguese cinema co-presented by the ICA, TERRATREME and Uma Pedra no Sapato.
