When AKASHI Koji’s (ABE Shinnosuke) father, a whistle-blower at a large automobile company, commits suicide, Koji finds himself caught in the crossfire. Returning to his family home, he discovers that his mother and younger sister are being pursued relentlessly by his deceased father’s debtors and former colleagues, and decides to stay with them while he seeks out the truth behind his father’s death.
His search leads him to KITAMURA Kenichi (ANDO Masanobu), the outwardly-agreeable owner of a local orphanage. Kenichi claims to owe Koji’s father a favour, and so he offers Koji a job in the orphanage’s kitchen, which Koji accepts. However, there is another side to Kenichi that only emerges at night, and Koji is also dragged in to help with these criminal activities. Little by little, Koji’s desire to take revenge on his father’s former employer grows as the double-life he now leads begins to chip away at the moral boundaries within him…
A profoundly original drama that directly challenges the fundamental concepts of good and evil, Day and Night unflinchingly tackles a wide range of social issues, from whistle-blowing and suicide to orphanhood and crime.
