Celluloid Sunday: Dust in the Wind on 35mm
Institute of Contemporary Arts
A young Taiwanese couple, dressed in military unform and school uniform, read books on a train into the countryside
Dust in the Wind, dir. Hou Hsiao-hsien, Taiwan 1986, 109 min., Taiwanese & Mandarin with English subtitles

A beloved favourite among Hou’s early films, Dust in the Wind is an affecting and poignantly fatalistic story of first love that follows a young couple, Wan and Huan, finishing high school and leaving their remote mining village in search of work and a new life in Taipei. Serving three years in the Republic of China Army separates the couple – Huan marries someone else, leaving Wan a regretful man.

Celluloid Sunday is a series of screenings showing on original format from the ICA Archive.
