When a Korean immigrant is wrongly convicted of murder, an investigative journalist sparks a huge social movement in a bid to get him freed. For their riveting debut documentary, journalists Julie Ha and Eugene Yi excavate a little-known yet hugely influential moment in recent American history.
San Francisco, 3 June 1973. At the corner of Pacific and Grant Avenues, Chinese gangland leader Yip Yee Tak is shot and killed by a gunman who quickly flees the scene. Chol Soo Lee, a 20-year-old Korean immigrant, is racially profiled, charged, convicted and sentenced to life in San Quentin – until the work of investigative journalist KW Lee ignites an unprecedented push for social action, inspiring a new generation of Asian American activists. Ha and Yi blend rare archival footage and first-hand accounts into a poignant portrait of a complex man who unwittingly found himself at the centre of a major social movement.
