A young cartoonist finds himself inexorably drawn to the strangest corners of American life in Owen Kline’s gloriously deranged directorial debut – a coming-of-age story quite unlike any other.
Robert (Daniel Zolghadri) believes that to be an artist is to suffer – so he gives up his affluent upbringing, drops out of high school and takes up residence in a stuffy New Jersey apartment where he can dedicate himself to his art. Obsessed with the likes of Robert Crumb and Harvey Pekar, Robert makes a thin living working part-time for the district attorney – where he meets Wallace (Matthew Maher), who once worked on many of the comics that he adores. Robert becomes besotted – and is led down a path to serial misadventure. Produced by the Safdie brothers, this delectably dark comedy heralds the arrival of a singular new voice in American independent cinema.
