Between 1984 and 1986, German cinematographer and documentary director Gisela Tuchtenhagen directed and filmed the five-part series Heimkinder [Childen in Care Homes] for North German regional television (NDR). It is the document of a daring educational experiment and at the same time a cinematic experiment that lets us follow a group of social workers take a group of male youths, the care system can’t cope with, to Portugal. They literally take off to take care, to give the youngsters a glimpse of a different life.
Tuchtenhagen, herself a trained nurse, travels along and captures the trip with unique commitment and tenderness. We are pulled in close, as the carers and those they care for challenge each other and the care system. This screening will provide a rare chance to see the first three parts of the series on 16mm with English subtitles.
This screening is part of the film series Off to Take Care - Celebrating the Many Facets of Care Work Through Film (Wednesday 15 – Sunday 19 November 2023) organised by the Goethe-Institut and curated by Annett Busch and Marie-Hélène Gutberlet
