Hermia & Helena + Viola
Institute of Contemporary Arts
A woman sits by the window, looking out to the street. Behind her are photographs. She has a notebook and a photograph on her lap.
Hermia & Helena, dir. Matías Piñeiro, Argentina / USA  2016, 87 min., Spanish and English with English subtitles

Viola, dir. Matías Piñeiro, Argentina 2012, 65 min., Spanish with English subtitles

Matias Piñeiro’s second ode to Shakespeare revolves around a group of actresses who, whilst performing in a production of several of Shakespeare’s plays, become engaged in a seductive game of love and its follies.

Imbued with an atmosphere of playful confusion, Viola engages effortlessly with the beauty of Shakespeare’s language whilst maintaining Piñeiro’s penchant for serpentine camera movements and elliptical narratives. Blending melodrama and comedy to delightful effect, Piñeiro’s third feature unfurls with a captivating musicality that imbues this tale of the mysteries and realities of love with an atmosphere of lightness and grace.

Hermia & Helena, dir. Matías Piñeiro, Argentina / USA  2016, 87 min., Spanish and English with English subtitles

A young theatre director from Buenos Aires travels to New York to work on a new translation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but soon finds herself longing for her life back home.

For his first film shot outside of Argentina and in the English language, Piñeiro crafts an intriguingly fragmented tale filled with reunions and separations. Featuring a cast comprised of both Piñeiro regulars and stalwarts of New York’s independent film scene, Hermia & Helena is a complex collage of amorous detours that crosses hemispheres and languages.
